2019 National Night Out

Recap of HYPU's 6th Annual National Night Out

National Night Out is a Nationwide event on the first Tuesday evening of August where law enforcement and community works together to promote public safety. Get to know the officers and neighbors in our community. National Night Out is an annual event to promote police-community partnerships and enhance relationships of neighbors and law enforcement. Hmong Youth and Parents United had their 6th annual National Night Out on August 6th, 2019 proudly sponsored by City Council Member Allen Warren of the Sacramento District 2.

We had the honor of Sacramento Mayor Steinberg’s staff member Zachery Yates, Derrick Matthews from
Assembly-member McCarty’s Office, Twin Rivers School Board Basim Elkarra, and Congresswoman for Sacramento Doris Matsui for joining us at National Night Out. A big thank you to Detective Vu and Lieutenant Muerritta of the Sacramento Police Department and Sacramento Fire Department Engine 20 for coming out and meeting the community. We had a number of community resources, who came out and gave information to the community such as Sacramento Children’s Home, Hmong Innovating Politics, HLUB Clinic, Learn Hmong With Me, Mutual Assistance Network, Asian Association of North Sacramento, Sacramento Covered, United Hmong Shaman Temple Inc., and Life Wireless. Miss Hmong California 2019 Mina Her and her pageant sister, Pazao Lor (Fresno, Ca) gave out free school supplies. Our other fun activities included a sushi demonstration by Yag Her, face painting, and balloon twisting by Thayeng Lor. KP Rentals donated their snow cone machine so we can give out snow cones on this hot night and serviced the community with their sweet cotton candy machine and super bounce house. We were able to get hot dogs catered by our very own local store Jimmy’s Soul Food and Hmong Cuisine. There were also free pizza and drinks available for all the attendees.

There were plenty of talented community members that came out to perform. Some highlights of the nights were M. Swans Dance Institute opening dance, rising stars Jordan Yang, Chee Her, and Pazao Lor, cultural dance groups such as Ntxhais Ntxim Hlub, Paj Tawg Tshiab, and Ntxhais Dej Hli, and Angie Her from HYPU’s kwv txhiaj community class. Thank you to Miss Hmong USA Pachia Lucy Vang for being our mistress of ceremony and to Atary Xiong for bringing out his sound system. The stage and setting up would not have been successful without support from the City of Sacramento.
Bringing community together and providing a safe space for family engagement. Last but not least, here is a big shout out to our local high school students who came to volunteer for this event. Thank you all!
